Novo Nordisk now sells two versions of Wegovy: a daily pill (approved December 2025) and the original weekly injection. Both contain semaglutide. Both are FDA-approved for weight loss. But the pill costs less than half the price of the injection at starting doses.

Effectiveness: Is the Pill as Good as the Shot?
Clinical trial data shows the injection produces slightly more weight loss than the pill — roughly 14.9% vs. 13.6% of body weight. For a 200-pound person, that's a difference of about 2.6 pounds over the trial period. Whether that difference matters to you is a personal judgment call.
The injection may have a slight edge because it delivers semaglutide directly into the bloodstream with near-complete absorption, while the pill has to survive the digestive tract with lower absorption rates. Novo Nordisk compensates by using higher milligram doses in the pill.
Convenience: Pill Wins for Most People
The pill eliminates needles, cold-chain shipping, and injection site reactions. However, it adds a daily dosing requirement (vs. weekly for the injection) and must be taken on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything other than water.
If taking a pill every morning before breakfast is easy for you, the pill wins on convenience. If you'd rather do one injection per week and not think about it for 7 days, the injection has its advantages.
