The Real Cost of GLP-1s Per Pound Lost: A Value Analysis No One Else Is Doing
Everyone compares GLP-1 providers by monthly cost. Nobody compares them by the metric that actually matters: how much does each pound of weight loss cost you?
We did the math. The results challenge some assumptions about which providers offer the best value — because the cheapest monthly price doesn't always produce the cheapest cost per pound lost.
The Framework: Cost Per Pound Lost
Cost per pound lost (CPL) divides your total treatment expenditure by the total pounds you lose. It accounts for both the price of the medication and its effectiveness — because a $300/month medication that helps you lose 40 pounds is a better value than a $150/month medication that helps you lose 15.
We can't calculate exact CPL for individual providers because weight loss outcomes depend on individual biology, adherence, lifestyle factors, and dose. But we can model CPL ranges based on clinical trial data and verified pricing.
The Model
Using published clinical trial data:
- Semaglutide average weight loss: ~15% of body weight over 68 weeks
- Tirzepatide average weight loss: ~20-25% of body weight over 72 weeks
- Reference patient: 240 lbs starting weight
- Treatment period: 12 months
At 15% loss, our reference patient loses 36 lbs on semaglutide. At 22.5% (midpoint for tirzepatide), they lose 54 lbs.

The Surprising Finding
Here's what the data reveals: tirzepatide's cost per pound lost is often comparable to or better than semaglutide's, despite its higher monthly price. At GobyMeds, tirzepatide's CPL ($30/lb) actually beats semaglutide's ($33/lb) because the greater weight loss more than offsets the higher monthly cost.
This doesn't mean tirzepatide is universally the better value — individual results vary enormously, and you might respond better to semaglutide. But it does mean that comparing providers purely on monthly cost misses half the picture.
What CPL Doesn't Capture
This analysis uses clinical trial averages, but your individual results depend on factors no price comparison can predict: your genetics, your starting weight, your adherence to the medication, your diet, your activity level, and your metabolic health. Some patients on the cheapest semaglutide lose 50+ pounds. Others on premium tirzepatide programs lose 20. Individual biology trumps averages every time.
CPL also doesn't capture the non-weight benefits of GLP-1 medications: cardiovascular risk reduction, improved sleep, better blood sugar control, reduced joint pain, and improved quality of life. These benefits have real value that a cost-per-pound metric can't quantify.
1. Start with a cost-effective semaglutide provider (GobyMeds at $99/mo or Yucca at $146/mo)
2. Give it 3-4 months to assess your individual response
3. If you're responding well, stay the course — your CPL is excellent
4. If you've plateaued, discuss switching to tirzepatide with your provider — the higher monthly cost may deliver a lower CPL through greater total weight loss
5. Combine medication with protein-forward nutrition and resistance training to maximize results per dollar spent
Price per month gets you in the door. Cost per pound lost tells you whether you got your money's worth. Use both metrics — and remember that the best value is always the one that produces sustainable results for your specific body.
